Cullinan 2 Diamond. A similar 2993-carat Type IIa white diamond recovered by Petra from the Cullinan mine in January sold for 1218 R180 million. Weighing in at 3106 carats the diamond was named the Cullinan after the mines owner Sir Thomas Cullinan.
It weighed about 1 13 pounds and measured just under 4 inches long over 2 inches wide and more than 25 inches high. A similar 2993-carat Type IIa white diamond recovered by Petra from the Cullinan mine in January sold for 1218 R180 million. A 3106-ct colorless diamond crystal was found on January 25 1905 at the Premier Mine now called the Cullinan Mine near Pretoria by one of the mine managers Frederick Wells.
Modern examinations of the two largest diamonds cut from the rough the 530 ct Cullinan I and the 317 ct Cullinan II which have been part of the Crown Jewels of England since their presenta- tion to King Edward VII in 1908.
On January 26 1905 mine superintendent Frederick Wells made an unusual find in Gauteng South Africa. The crown contains 2868 diamonds including the famous cushion cut 3174 carat Cullinan II diamond also known as the Second Star of Africa the second largest stone cut from the Cullinan Diamond. Some of the diamonds including Cullinan II were added into the Imperial State Crown Credit. Its original weight was ascertained at 310675 carats.
