Red and pink diamonds probably owe their color to light interacting with defects such as missing atoms in their crystalline structure. Observers originally thought the deep red 503-carat gem was a garnet. Its last owner was Boston gem dealer S.
Sydney DeYoung who bequeathed it to the Smithsonian before he died in 1986.
Today The DeYoung Red is on display at the Smithsonian in a case that is occupied by some of the worlds largest rarest and most valuable diamonds. In addition to these contributions DeYoung has helped. Simon DeYoung emigrated from Holland with four of his colleagues. The De Young Red Weighing at 503 carats this is the third largest diamond on our list.
